Interview: Upcoming R&B Songwriter Vienna Talks New Music

Alternative R&B and pop artist Vienna I is teasing her upcoming EP RYDA with the release of her
single Blank in Space, set to release April 7th, 2023.

How would you describe your songwriting process?

“I started writing songs when I was just 11 and it’s been a long journey. I’ve grown so much as a songwriter I remember in the beginning I struggled because I love songwriting but sometimes, I didn’t know how to fit in the words properly or how to get across what I was trying to express through my lyrics. But I’ve grown a lot, I’ve experienced a lot and through my lyrics, people get to know about me and that is all I’ve ever wanted.”

How has this process evolved over time?

“I definitely have evolved as a songwriter over the many years I’ve been writing songs. I now understand truly how to express who I am through my lyrics and that is all I’ve ever wanted to do. I feel as though now as people listen to my songs, they are truly getting to know me.”

Do you take songwriting inspiration from anyone in particular?

“I’ve been influenced by the people around me and the people who have defined experiences around me. I remember listening to ‘Gravity’ by Sara Bareilles and I remember thinking about how I want my music to tell the type of story and reach people the way that that song touched me.”

What is the hardest thing about songwriting to you?

“I think the hardest thing about songwriting is having to truly be open about myself and who I am. I’ve always found it hard to speak about the things that affect me because I try to portray a hard exterior but my music really let my guard down. I’m not really used to that in real life. Having to dig deep not only into my experiences but into my emotions that I feel and felt during situations is difficult, but I love doing it anyway.”

Do you have any remedies for a creative writing block?

“Figure out your barrier (what is the blockage), then meditate, write down all the things stressing you, think about what it is you want to write a song about and make notes on that topic.”
