Engegård Quartet: Pushing Boundaries in Classical and Folk Music

The prestigious Engegård Quartet, an international ensemble renowned for their impeccable renditions of classical masterpieces, is taking the music world by storm once again. This time, however, they are captivating audiences with a refreshing twist as they release a series of videos showcasing their talent in Norwegian folk music.

Filmed in the stunning backdrop of Lofoten in collaboration with Aurora Borealis Multimedia AS, the quartet’s renditions of traditional folk melodies have been described as nothing short of sublime. Their first video “En Smuk Aftensang” is a spellbinding melody from Kvæfjord, arranged by the talented Bjørn Andor Drage. This poignant evening prayer has become a fan favorite, capturing the hearts of listeners with its haunting beauty. Another standout in the series is “Skotsk”, an energetic dance number from Lom that has been deemed the “perfect icebreaker” by the quartet.

This lively piece is an excellent gateway to the world of Norwegian folk music and is sure to delight both new and long-standing fans. But the quartet doesn’t stop there. They also bring a fresh take on traditional wedding marches with their rendition of “Bruremarsj frå Eide”. This piece, inspired by the long march the bride would take to meet her groom, carries a somber yet captivating tone that is sure to leave a lasting impression. No Norwegian folk music series would be complete without a touch of the mystical, and the Engegård Quartet delivers just that with their interpretation of “Yoik Suite”.

Originally a duet for Hardanger fiddles by Sigmund Lillebjerka, the quartet’s arrangement incorporates the enchanting singing of wolves from the plains of Lapland, transporting listeners to a world of wonder. Last but certainly not least, the quartet presents “Haugelåt”, a powerful narrative that weaves together the traditional folk melody of the same name with Grieg’s Opus 72. With its vivid storytelling and intricate melodies, this piece is a true testament to the quartet’s musical prowess. The Engegård Quartet’s mastery of both classical and folk genres has earned them high praise from esteemed critics and publications. Their debut album was described by The Strad as “breathtaking”, and they have since received numerous accolades, including two ‘Choc de Classica’ awards and a ‘Supersonic Award’ from Pizzicato magazine. With their latest series of videos, the Engegård Quartet continues to push boundaries and captivate audiences with their exceptional musicality.

Their fusion of classical and folk music serves as a testament to the enduring power of music to transcend genres and touch the hearts and souls of listeners worldwide. We eagerly await their next release, and in the meantime, we highly recommend immersing yourself in the enchanting world of the Engegård Quartet.
