Pete Cater will release his new EP, West Side Story, on May 1st, 2026, adding another significant project to a career built on jazz excellence, independence, and resilience. The British drummer, widely recognised for his contribution to the UK jazz scene, returns with a recording that reflects both his technical command and his continuing artistic ambition.
The EP was created in a setting far removed from a conventional professional studio. Recorded in a school hall during the summer break, West Side Story demonstrates how strong musicianship and careful production can result in a refined and powerful sound, regardless of location. The release features exceptional musicians and presents Cater at what is described as a creative peak.
Cater’s reputation has been shaped by decades of work as a performer and bandleader. He was voted 5th Best Jazz Drummer in the World by readers of Rhythm Magazine and has received recognition including Best Big Band at the British Jazz Awards and Best Drummer at the Radio 2 National Big Band Contest. These achievements underline his status as one of the most respected jazz drummers to emerge from the UK.
Alongside the release of West Side Story, Cater will bring The Great Drum Show to live audiences in May. He is scheduled to perform at Pizza Express in Soho on May 17th and at the Concorde Club in Eastleigh on May 20th. These dates will offer audiences a chance to experience his celebrated drumming style and stage presence in person.
Cater’s story is also one of lifelong dedication. Born in Staffordshire in 1963 and inspired by his drummer father, he began performing while still in his early teens. Now based in West Sussex, he continues to champion independent music through his own label while maintaining a strong voice on the challenges facing musicians today.
